Optiphen (Phenoxyethanol + Caprylyl Glycol): Broad-Spectrum Preservative for Versatile Formulations.

Famously known as Optiphen, this preservative system combines Phenoxyethanol and Caprylyl Glycol to offer broad-spectrum protection against bacteria, yeast, and mold. It’s a paraben-free and formaldehyde-free option that enhances product stability and extends shelf life. Ideal for use in emulsions (O/W, W/O) and certain anhydrous formulations, this preservative is versatile and suitable for a wide range of cosmetic applications.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Broad-Spectrum Preservation: Effectively protects against bacteria, yeast, and mold, safeguarding product integrity.
  • Paraben-Free & Formaldehyde-Free: Offers a safer, eco-friendly alternative that appeals to health-conscious consumers.
  • Versatile Compatibility: Suitable for various formulations containing cationic, ionic, or non-ionic surfactants.
  • Heat Stable: Can be incorporated into formulations at temperatures up to 60°C (140°F) without degradation.
  • Effective Across pH Range: Works best in formulations with a pH between 4.0 and 8.0.

Ingredients (INCI Name): Caprylyl Glycol (and) Phenoxyethanol

CAS Numbers: 122-99-6 (Phenoxyethanol), 1117-86-8 (Caprylyl Glycol)

Optimal pH : 4 to 8

Recommended usage levels: 0.5 - 1.5%.

Appearance: Clear colourless liquid

Solubility: Partially soluble in water, fully soluble in oils; best used in emulsified systems.

Applications

  • Skincare: Ideal for creams, lotions, serums, and emulsions, where broad-spectrum microbial protection is essential.
  • Haircare: Perfect for preserving shampoos, conditioners, and other water-containing haircare products.
  • Anhydrous Products: Can be used in non-water-based formulations, such as balms and butters, though its efficacy is less optimal in fully anhydrous systems.
  • Emulsions: Works well in oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions to maintain stability.

Usage Instructions

  • Recommended Use: 0.5% to 1.5% of the total weight of the formulation.
  • Temperature Considerations: Add Optiphen during the cool-down phase, ideally when the formulation is below 60°C (140°F), to prevent destabilization or degradation of the preservative.
  • pH Compatibility: Best used in products with a pH between 4.0 and 8.0.
  • Formulation Tip: Optiphen can be prone to destabilizing emulsions if added at too high a temperature. It’s recommended to mix thoroughly as the product cools to maintain formulation integrity.

Safety Information

  • External Use Only: Optiphen is intended for external use in cosmetic formulations. It is not suitable for internal consumption and is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
  • Precautions: Pregnant individuals or those under medical supervision should consult their healthcare provider before using products containing Optiphen.
